The use of laser light for medical procedures began in the 1960s when lasers were first used in operations as cutting tools by some surgeons.

Laser technology has developed over the last few decades to treat patients with a variety of different skin problems including the effects of sun damage, hair removal, thread and varicose veins and, recently, the treatment of psoriasis and acne. In fact, laser treatment for hair removal was developed after they had been used to treat skin problems.

What Are Lasers / IPL / LHE Machines and How Do They Work?

A laser is a high-energy beam of light that can transfer its energy through the skin to a specific part of the body. These beams of light can vary in terms of their strength and the type of tissue that they can target. In the case of hair removal, pigment contained in the hair shaft can be targeted as can the hair follicle or root with a single specific wavelength (or colour) of light generated by the laser. This energy heats up the base of the hair follicle, which causes damage to the bulb, which produces hair growth. If enough damage is done, this will prevent the hair from growing any further.

We use an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser that combines two forms of energy: light and radiofrequency. This system achieves skin rejuvenation and renewal by selectively heating the deeper tissues while cooling the skin’s surface.

What to Expect from your laser treatment?

Your first discussion with a practitioner should clearly set out your expectations; He or she should be able to prescribe the most appropriate type of light treatment for you.

A medical history should be taken to ensure that there are no reasons why you shouldn’t have the treatment. You would also normally be asked to read detailed information and sign a consent form at this time which means that you have understood the potential benefits and risks associated with the procedure recommended.

Photographs may also be taken by the practitioner for a "before and after" comparison at a later date.

Treatment procedure?

This procedure generally requires no special pre-treatment care.

A cooling gel will be applied to the skin and you will be required to wear eye protectors for all laser and IPL machines.

Depending upon the type of system used, you may experience a slight stinging sensation in the area treated during the procedure. The treatment usually takes between 15 to 30 minutes depending on the area.

Repeat procedures?

The procedure may be repeated every 4 weeks for hair removal and every week for skin rejuvenation or so for 5 or 6 courses to achieve the desired effect. Afterwards, every 6 months for maintenance, as required.

Recovery?

Most patients will be able to return to work immediately following the procedure.

Post-treatment advice may include:

• moisturizing the area treated regularly;
• Not exposing the area treated to the sun without a sunscreen for at least 2 weeks to reduce the risk of pigmentation or change in skin color.
• A high factor sun block should be used daily to protect the skin;
